Keeping a Diet While Travelling

Travelling means never having to say you’re hungry. You can tighten your belt (literally and figuratively) while having the time of your life on the road.  Sticking to a healthy diet can be a real challenge, especially when it feels like restaurant after restaurant that you pass are screaming your name, pulling you in, and the next thing you know is you’re already ordering meals with your eyes, ignoring your diet, eating too much and leave feeling bloated, but it is worth an extra effort to apply self-control.

When you manage to stick to a healthy diet during your travels, your entire wellbeing will feel truly victorious. Here’s a few tricks that always work magic for me while I’m travelling:

  • Eat a full healthy breakfast.

When choosing a hotel accommodation, I find it important and necessary to ask the kind of breakfast that is included in my room rate. Personally, I am a big fan of a breakfast buffet, but there were also times when I was served a complimentary breakfast consisting of meager portions of cheese, jams, butter, honey, olives, a piece of boiled egg, along with a glass of tea and a tray full of 5 or 6 slices of bread. In the case of the latter, I would usually end up munching a lot of fast food for lunch. Taking an early morning swim or walk are a great way to work up an appetite. When I take either, I feel more motivated to eat healthy and just the right choices and just the right amount of portions.

  • Opt for Apartment Hotels instead of Hotels

What I love about apartment hotel accommodations is the kitchen equipped with kitchenwares, refrigerator, electric stove, and dining space. Economy wise, I find it a fun experience to enjoy shopping at a local farmers’ market where fresh local produce is cheaper. For meats I also stay local, I go to a butcher for my red and white meats, avoiding anything frozen. I also make sure that there’s always hearty snacks like yogurt and protein bars in my fridge that I can munch in the afternoon, at least 2 hours before an early dinner.

  • Do a Lot of Water Sports or Activities During the Day and Take Leisurely Walks Before Calling it a Night Engaging yourself in physical activities during the day is a great way to burn those calories and  help tone your muscles. The more active I am during the day, the better and bigger the appetite that I have. For instance, after doing water sports I get crazy cravings for seafood, BBQ, and cantaloupes.

Taking leisurely walks before retiring for the night helps me get better and earlier sleep at night; in addition to an awesome experience witnessing beauty and vibe at night.

  • Stay Hydrated and Well-rested

Drink plenty of water and stay away from soft drinks and fruit juices in a box as they have very high sugar content. A bottle of beer can be relaxing at night, but a glass of red wine should suit better before you retire. If you retire early, you can get a good eight hours of sleep, wake up early and feel energized to get on with your day’s itinerary.

Remember, just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to put your health and well-being on the wayside. Follow through with a good healthy diet and live to travel more year after year.
